Big Tidy Up - Next Litter pick is Sunday 26 February 2012

The BCA has held several litter picks over the last three years (usually at least once a term). We have made a significant difference to the amout of litter in the area around the school perimeter and in the green spaces around the school (Bulmershe fields). Our next litter pick will be on Sunday 26 February 2012 at 10 am. Please meet by the Chequer's way entrance to the school. Bring gloves and suitable footwear. We will provide litter pickers and bags. Please contact the BCA to find out more (Contact the BCA).

If you live in Woodley, why not join the WASP scheme? (Woodley Adopt a Street Project). Does litter annoy you, especially along your
own road? Are you prepared to help keep your own stretch of road clear of litter or maybe a local footpath or green area? By going out whenever it suits you, perhaps for half an hour once a week, you can achieve a cleaner and tidier Woodley for everyone. It’s so easy, pick up as you walk and bin or bag it. You can put out what you collect with your weekly rubbish. To find out more, please download the leaflets (pdf format) and/or contact Woodley Town Council on 0118 9690356 or email admin@woodley.gov.uk

The BCA took part in the Big Tidy Up in March 2010 and 2011. We worked hard for several hours to clear litter from the Bulmershe Fields area around the school. We were presented with Mayor's Awards for our contribution to the events. We would like to thank local Councillor Shelagh Flowers for sharing her prize with us and donating 10 'handy hoops' to help with our next litter pick.

Our efforts were reported in the local press: http://www.getreading.co.uk/news/s/2068206_bulmershe_big_tidy_up_bags_loads_of_rubbish

We have since conducted several smaller scale litter picks and aim to run one every term.

You can see details of our efforts in 2009, including our Mayor's Award on the Big Tidy Up 2009 page

BCA Big Tidy Up March 2010

 Certificate from Wokingham Mayor

The BCA team collected 14 bags of rubbish and found a burnt out shopping trolley, a jemmy, an artificial Christmas tree and an abandoned vacuum cleaner. Of our 14 bags of rubbish, half were filled with recyclable materials such as cans and plastic bottles. Our efforts were covered by the local press and a slideshow of pictures can be seen on the Big Tidy Up page.

The litter pick was part of Wokingham's Big Tidy Up event. More than 500 people from across the borough including residents, neighbourhood action groups, community groups, Junior Wardens and environmental groups joined in the nationwide litter pick aimed at keeping Britain tidy. The final count confirmed that more than 600 bags of rubbish were collected from parks, beauty spots, community areas and village centres across the borough. The rubbish varied from the usual drink cans and crisp packets to the more unusual items such as car tyres, £10 note (since donated to charity), crates of unopened beer, unopened wine, a fire extinguisher, a camping gas stove, a teddy bear, three bicycles, three canisters of petrol/oil, 12 rolls of kitchen foil, a moped and a plastic cow’s head.

Thank you to all who helped with the tidy-up.

For more information about Wokingham's Big Tidy Up, please see their press release which describes the huge effort from lots of different community groups over the weekend.

Litter Pick Sunday 18 October 2009

volunteers

Thank you to all those who helped with our October tidy-up. We cleared the perimeter of the school, concentrating our efforts on the area around the 6th form block, the pedestrian pathway between Pitts Lane and the back of the school and the shrub areas around the Goals car park. Despite disturbing a wasp's nest and having to beat a hasty retreat, we picked up 5 bags of recycling (cans and bottles) and around 6 bags of ordinary rubbish.

Recycling
The cans and bottles that we found were recycled via Wokingham's kerbside recycling scheme. Even squashed flat, we collected enough to fill three of the black containers.
